Question
Chapter 13, Problem 56A
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: The reason of gas behaving non-ideally on decreasing the volume of gas is to be discussed.
Concept introduction:
This is based on kinetic theory of gases.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 56A
When volume of a gas is decreased, the volume occupied by a gas molecule becomes measurable. So, gas deviates from ideal behaviour.
Explanation of Solution
According to kinetic molecular theory, a gas which is ideal follows:
- Volume occupied by a molecule should be negligible as compared to total volume of gas.
- There should be no attractive forces between the gas molecules.
So, when volume is decreased, the gas particles come closer and attractions between the particles increases. So, it behaves no-ideally.
Conclusion
Thus gases deviate from ideal behaviour on decreasing the volume of the gas.
