Diet of ducks bred for broiling. Corn is high in starch content; consequently, it is considered excellent feed for domestic chickens. Does corn possess the same potential in feeding ducks bred for broiling? This was the subject of research published in Animal Feed Science and Technology (April 201 0). The objective of the study was to establish a prediction model for the true metabolizable energy (TME) of corn regurgitated from ducks. The researchers considered 11 potential predictors of TME: dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), ash (ASH), crude fiber (CF). neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), gross energy (GE), amylose (AM), amylopectin (AP), and amylopectin/amylose (AMAP). Stepwise regression was used to find the best subset of predictors. The final stepwise model yielded the following results:
- a. Determine the number of 1-tests performed in step 1 of the stepwise regression.
- b. Determine the number of 1-tests performed in step 2 of the stepwise regression
- c. Give a full interpretation of the final stepwise model regression results.
- d. Explain why it is dangerous to use the final stepwise model as the "best" model for predicting TME.
- e. Using the independent variables selected by the stepwise routine, write a complete second-order model for TME.
- f. Refer to part e. How would you determine if the terms in the model that allow for curvature are statistically useful for predicting TME?

- A group of 10-year-old boys were first ascertained in a camp for diabetic boys. They had their weight measured at baseline and again when they returned to camp 1 year later. Each time, a serum sample was obtained from which a determination of hemoglobin A1c (HgbA1c) was made. HgbA1c (also called glycosylated hemoglobin) is routinely used to monitor compliance with taking insulin injections. Usually, the poorer the compliance, the higher the HgbA1c level will be. The hypothesis is that the level HgbA1c is related to weight. The data in Table 11.28 were obtained. 11.95 Compute a rank correlation between change in weight and change in HgbA1c, each over 1 year. Use this measure to directly test the hypothesis that change in weight over 1 year is related to change in HgbA1c. Report a two-tailed p-value, and provide a 95% confidence interval for the underlying rank correlation.arrow_forwardConsider a single variable model to estimate the effect of in-person lecture attendance on university students' WAMs (weighted average marks): (C1) WAM = β0 + β1Attend + u Where: WAMis a student's weight average mark Attendis the proportion of lectures attended by a student in an academic year Using the information above, answer the following 3 questions. [i] Explain why Attend might be endogenous in Model (C1). What does this suggest about E [u ∣ Attend]? [ii] Suppose that student attendance is related to a student's conscientiousness. Does this mean that conscientiousness would be a good instrumental variable for Attend? Why or why not? Explain your reasoning. [iii] Unfortunately a major strike by railway works disrupts transport links to 3 of the 7 universities in a city for a period of 2 weeks. This temporarily means that students who are enrolled at those 3 affected universities cannot attend lectures in person. - Explain the Stationarity in the AR(1) Model?arrow_forwardCarbon dioxide is known to have a critical effect on microbiological growth. Small amounts of CO2 stimulate growth of some organisms, whereas high concentrations inhibit the growth of most. The latter effect is used commercially when perishable food products are stored. A study is conducted to investigate the effect of CO2 on the growth rate of pseudomonas fragi, a food-spoiling organism. Carbon dioxide is administered at five predetermined different atmospheric pressures. The response measured was the percentage change in cell mass after 1-hour growing time. Ten cultures were used at each atmospheric pressure level, resulting in the following data: 0.0 .083 .29 .50 .86 62.6 50.9 45.5 29.5 24.9 59.6 44.3 41.1 22.8 17.2 64.5 47.5 29.8 19.2 7.8 59.3 49.5 38.3 20.6 10.5 58.6 48.5 40.2 29.2 17.8 64.6 50.4 38.5 24.1 22.1 50.9 35.2 30.2 22.6 22.6 56.2 49.9 27.0 32.7 16.8 52.3…arrow_forwardThe purification of industrial waste is often a destructive process with manybeneficial components removed from the waste as part of the cleansing process. As part of some trials to reuse industrial sludge as a mulch for planting, conservation of existing nitrogen levels in the sludge is being studied. Nitrogen is used in plants to synthesize amino acids, proteins, chlorophyll, nucleic acids, and enzymes. Initial testing showed 1 kg of sludge contained 254 mg of nitrogen and after the cleaning process there were 189 mg of nitrogen left. What is the percentage reduction of nitrogen?arrow_forward

While it is known that several coffee-bean components can elevate blood cholesterol level, it is thought that a new type of paper coffee filter may reduce the presence of some of these components in coffee. The effect of the new filter on cholesterol level will be studied over a 10-week period using 300 nonsmokers who each drink 4 cups of caffeinated coffee per day. Each of these 300 participants will be assigned to one of two groups: the experimental group, who will only drink coffee that has been made with the new filter, or the control group, who will only drink coffee that has been made with the standard filter. Each participant’s cholesterol level will be measured at the beginning and at the end of the study. Which test would you conduct to determine whether the change in cholesterol level would be greater if people used the new filter rather than using the standard filter?
