A crate, in the form of a cube with edge lengths of 1.2 m, contains a piece of machinery; the center of mass of the crate and its contents is located 0.30 m above the crate’s geometrical center. The crate rests on a ramp that makes an angle θ with the horizontal. As θ is increased from zero, an angle will be reached at which the crate will either tip over or start to slide down the ramp. If the coefficient of static friction μs between ramp and crate is 0.60, (a) does the crate tip or slide and (b) at what angle θ does this occur? If μs = 0.70, (c) does the crate tip or slide and (d) at what angle θ does this occur? (Hint: At the onset of tipping, where is the normal force located?)

- A 24 kg rectangular 4.00 m x 3.00 m rectangular sign is suspended from a horizontal 6.00 m long rod with a 5 kg mass as indicated in the figure. The left end of the rod is supported by a hinge, and the right end is supported by a thin cable making a 30.0° angle with the vertical. Draw a free body diagram and calculate the tension T in the cable. The thin cable breaks if it is pulled by more than 200 N. Show than in the present situation the cable can not support the sign without breaking. Show the cable is able to support the load if it is attached higher up such that it makes an angle of 20.0° angle S0.0 CE CREAM SHOP with the vertical.arrow_forwardA rectangular block twice as high as it is wide is resting on a board. If the board’s inclination angle is gradually increased, will the block first tip over or first begin sliding?arrow_forwardA sandwich board advertising sign is constructed as shown. The sign’s mass is 8.00 kg. Even though the chain is broken and the hinge is frictionless, the board is able to stand without collapsing. What is the minimum coefficient of static friction between the sign and the sidewalk?arrow_forward
- A 3.0-mm -long ladder, leans against a frictionless wall. The coefficient of static friction between the ladder and the floor is 0.50. What is the minimum angle the ladder can make with the floor without slipping?arrow_forwardA 6 m long board is held up at each end by a vertical rope. Assume the board has negligible mass. A 60 kg box sits 4 m from the left end. Find the tension in the rope on the right.arrow_forwardA ladder, whose length 10 m and whose mass is 40 kg rest against a frictionless vertical wall. Its upperend is a distance of 7.7 m above the ground. The center of mass of the ladder is 1/3 of the way up the ladder. The coefficient of static friction between the ladder and the ground is 0.53. If a carpenter climbs 85% of the way up the ladder before it starts to slip, find the mass of the carpenter.arrow_forward
- A 3.0-m-long ladder leans against a wall at an angle of 60° with respect to the floor. What is the minimum value of μs , the coefficient of static friction with the ground, that will prevent the ladder from slipping? Assume that friction between the ladder and the wall is negligible.arrow_forwardA fence post of mass m = 8 kg supports a fence with three lengths of barbed wire. The bottom wire is a distance d = 0.35 m from the ground and each wire is a distance 0.35 m above the previous one. Each of these three wires has the tension on it. For this problem, assume that the force exerted by these wires is purely horizontal. An additional guy wire is used to keep the pole upright with a tension of Fa = 490 N. The guy wire attaches to the post at a point h = 0.86 m above the ground and makes an angle of θ = 45 with respect to the horizontal. Write an expression for the tension in any one of the three fence wires. What is the normal force that the ground exerts upward on the post?arrow_forwardOne end of a uniform meter stick is placed against a vertical wall. The other end is held by a lightweight cord that makes an angle 0 with the stick. The coefficient of static friction between the end of the meter stick and the wall is µ, = 0. 400. A. What is the maximum value the 0 can have if the stick is to remain in equilibrium? A block of the same weight as the meter stick is suspended from the stick, as shown, at a distance x from the wall. Assume that 0 = 15.0° in this problem. What is the minimum value of x for which the stick will remain in equilibrium? When 0 = 15.0°, how large must the coefficient of static friction be so that the block can be C. attached 0. 100 [m] from the left end of the stick with out causing it to slip? B.arrow_forward
