Interpretation:

Draw the carbocation intermediate that must be generated to produce aldehyde from the acid-catalyzed hydration of ethynylbenzene. Explain why it is less stable than the carbocation intermediate shown in equation 11-21.

Concept introduction:

In order to form an aldehyde, there must be formation of a bond between one of two carbon atoms of ethyl group and O from water. The two carbon atoms are terminal and internal. This in turn depends on the carbon atom on which the carbocation is formed due to the first step of electrophilic addition.
