Introduction:

Oxidative phosphorylationthat occurs in the mitochondria is a metabolic pathway that produces energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) by establishing a proton gradient. This proton gradient, across the membrane, is produced by the transfer of electrons through four complexes that are found embedded within the inner membrane. Lastly, ATP synthase enzyme that is present in tandem with these complexes produces ATP by utilizing this proton gradient.
