Chapter 1, Problem 1.8P

A thermodynamic analysis of a proposed Brayton cyclegas turbine yields P = 5 MW of net power production.The compressor, at an average temperature of T c = 400 ° C , is driven by the turbine at an average temperature of T h = 1000 ° C by way of an L = 1 -m-long , d = 70 -mm-diameter shat of thermal conductivity k = 40 W/m K .
Chapter 1, Problem 1.8P, A thermodynamic analysis of a proposed Brayton cyclegas turbine yields P=5MW of net power
(a) Compare the steady-state conduction rate through the shaft connecting the hot turbine to the warm compressor to the net power predicted by the thermodynamics-based analysis.
(b) A research team proposes to scale down the gas turbine of part (a), keeping all dimensions in the same proportions. The team assumes that the same hot and cold temperatures exist as in part (a) and that the net power output of the gas turbine is proportional to the overall volume of the device. Plot the ratio of the conduction through the shall to the net power output of the turbine over the range m L 1 m . Is a scaled-down device with L = 0.005 m feasible?

Steam flows through an adiabatic turbine at the rate of 100 lb/min with AK = 0 and Q= 0. At entry, its pressure is 175 psia, its volume is 3.16 ft1b and its internal energy is 1166.7 BTU/b. At exit, its pressure is 0.813 psia, its volume is 328 ftlb and its internal energy is 854.6 BTU/lb. (a) What horsepower is developed? (b) The same as (a) except that the turbine is not adiabatic and the heat loss from it is 10 BTU/lb of steam.
