Question

If you have an mRNA sequnece below that looks like :

5' cap,  Cytidine, CCUCUUUUCC,  gene,  AAAAA

Which parts of the mRNA are included in the 5' UTR?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Messenger RNA or mRNA is a single stranded RNA synthesized from a DNA template by a process called transcription. mRNAs are involved in protein synthesis. The role of mRNA is to carry information from DNA in the nucleus of the cell to the cytoplasm of the cell, where ribosomes perform translation of mRNA and form proteins.

mRNA consist of following regions:-

  • 5'-cap - It is a cap of methyl guanosine triphosphate  present at the 5' end of the mRNA.
  • poly-A tail - At the 3' end of mRNA, polyadenylate tail is present.
  • UTRs- These are the untranslated regions present before the start codon and after the stop codon. The 5'UTR region is present before the coding region and 3'UTR region is present after the coding region.
  • The coding region -coding region is made of codons. A codon is a triplet of nucleotides which code for a specific amino acid. Codons are translated by ribosomes to form polypeptide chains. AUG is the start codon present at the beginning of the coding region. UAA, UGA and UAG are stop codons present at the end of the coding region.
