Some genes do not synthesize protein by utilising the entire DNA sequence. Introns are non-coding segments of an RNA transcript or the DNA that encodes it that are spliced away before the RNA molecule is translated into a protein. Exons are the segments of DNA or RNA that code for proteins. Following transcription, new, immature strands of messenger RNA, known as pre-mRNA, may contain introns and exons. The noncoding introns are cut out, leaving only the coding exons, and the pre-mRNA molecule undergoes a modification process called splicing in the nucleus. After splicing, a mature messenger RNA molecule is produced, which is then translated into a protein. Intervening sequences are another name for introns.
