comment on quote:  “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” by Albert Einstein

In my professional experience, conflict occurs when two parties feel their needs, ideas, or livelihood is threatened.” In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity,” by Albert Einstein, which is one of my favorite quotes and often reminds me that hard times or life challenges can bring opportunity. This quote means that in challenging times or situations, there is always an opportunity or lesson learned.

Recently my organization went through a reduction in force (RIF). It was a very challenging time as many people were affected and lost their jobs. Those that remained with the company were also challenged; we had to adjust and take on new roles with much uncertainty. I saw some people rise to the top and thrive in that environment; others crumbled and expressed a lot of negativity and stress. The unstable environment caused a lot of anxiety and stress among the team; however, as time passed, we noticed increased productivity and overall sales numbers. As an organization, we learned that we didn’t need as many people to do the job as we had, and the experiences we are getting on multiple levels is one that we did not have before.

During this time of conflict I have had the opportunity to lead others, which has been challenging and rewarding. Helping others recognize the cost savings, redundant positions, and the work needed to streamline our business is valuable to all employees and the organization. Our organization's future success relied heavily on reducing force, which means a difficult time led to an opportunity for my organization.
