Write down both your mentor’s words and actions and the child’s words and actions. Lyla and Sofia were playing with the doll house at free choice. Jack was on the carpet playing with blocks. When jack finished playing with his blocks and cleaned up his area, he wanted to play with Lyla and Sofia with the doll house. Lyla and Sofia did not want Jack to join their play. Jack yelled “That’s not fair! You are not being kind. I want to play so you have to let me play with you.” Ms. Lorraine approached jack and got down to his level and said “Jack, I know you want to play the doll house with Lyla and Sofia, but shouting at them is not going to get them to play with you. You cannot shout at others. It is not very kind. If you want Lyla and Sofia to be kind to you, you need to practice being kind to them also.” Jack was upset. He was screaming at Ms. Lorraine while crying and stomping his feet often. Jack shouted, ‘It’s just not fair!” Ms. Lorraine offered “ Jack, would you like to do another indoor play task Acknowledge the child’s intention. Clearly state to the child what he/she has done that is not acceptable. Clearly tell the child why he/she may not do this. Clearly describe to the child what he/she may do instead to satisfy his/her intentions. 3

American River College / Lorraine Chow / ECE 320 – Curriculum and Interactions in Early Childhood Education / Fall Semester 2023 while you wait for Lyla and Sofia to be done or do you want to go outside and play on the playground?” Jack was still very upset and asked to go on a walk with Ms. Lorraine to make himself feel better. 2. Reflection Questions A. If your mentor missed a step, identify the missing step, and describe what your mentor could have said. B. From the child’s perspective, describe what this child learned from the guidance strategy: Limit-Setting and Redirection. (Minimum: 100 words) From Jack’s perspective, I think he may have learned about how to communicate with his classmates. Ms. Lorraine is always very calm but stern and Jack had a lot of feelings in this moment. She was able to tell that another indoor task may not suit his feelings and emotions in this exact moment and offered him the outside time to be able to physically release some energy. I think that he was very accepting of this offer and may have previously learned that going on a walk calms his feelings and allows him time to understand how he can react differently in the future. (Word count: 105) C. From the child’s perspective, describe how the guidance strategy: Limit- Setting and Redirection, helps build a trusting relationship with his/her teacher. (Minimum: 100 words) From Jack’s perspective, Limit-Setting and Redirection helps to build a trusting relationship with Ms. Lorraine by creating strong communication. Ms. Lorraine gave Jack clear boundaries of not shouting at friends to get his way. Although Jack was still upset after Ms. Lorraine set this boundary, Jack can learn through repetition and communication that this reaction is not a healthy choice. Jack asking to go on a walk with Ms. Lorraine is an example of how the continued guidance strategies being used in Discovery Club have allowed Ms. Lorraine to build a trusting relationship with Jack. Jack may feel that this is a good way he can discuss his feelings with Ms. Lorraine away from his classmates. (Word count: 116) 4
American River College / Lorraine Chow / ECE 320 – Curriculum and Interactions in Early Childhood Education / Fall Semester 2023 Limited Choice 1. Give a detailed example of this guidance strategy: Limited Choice, and color code each step. Guidance Strategy: Limited Choice Assign a color to each step of limited choice and highlight each step in your example. Write down both your mentor’s words and actions and the child’s words and actions. Sofia had been playing with a couple different areas of the classroom during free choice. When it was time to clean up, Sofia did not want to clean up any of her different areas. Ms. Lorraine stated, Sofia, I know you don’t want to clean up, but the big kids are coming into the class in 10 minutes.” Sofia stated she had too much to clean up and did not want to do it. Ms. Lorraine told her “You have two areas to clean up. Would you like to clean up the barbies first or the books in the library that you took out first?” Sofia decided that she wanted to start with cleaning up her books in the library first, then cleaned up her barbies after. Acknowledge why the child is resisting. Clearly state to the child what you expect him/her to do. Clearly tell the child why you need him/her to do this. Clearly offer the child a choice of two different ways to accomplish what you are asking them to do. 2. Reflection Questions A. If your mentor missed a step, identify the missing step, and describe what your mentor could have said. B. From the child’s perspective, describe what this child learned from the guidance strategy: Limited Choice. (Minimum: 100 words) Sofia may have learned a couple of different things during this scenario. The concept that she needs to clean up her books and toys is a part of a repetitive routine. This routine that is being built teaches her how to 5
American River College / Lorraine Chow / ECE 320 – Curriculum and Interactions in Early Childhood Education / Fall Semester 2023 manage cleaning up after herself in the classroom. Sofia hearing this when needed is a reminder that she is developing these skills with the guidance of the teacher. I also think Sofia is learning expectations from this. She knows that if she does not manage her time to include cleaning up, that the teacher will give her options on how to execute this. (Word count: 104) C. From the child’s perspective, describe how the guidance strategy: Limited Choice, helps build a trusting relationship with his/her teacher. (Minimum: 100 words) From Sofia’s perspective, I think learning to manage herself and her time by cleaning up her books and toys adds to the classroom dynamic. If the teacher can comfortably and confidently guide the children to develop their self management, then they can be a positive example for other students. Building this trust can be observed by other students who are around and can indirectly teach them of the same expectations and skills that Ms. Lorraine is teaching Sofia. Without these examples, the surrounding children would only learn from their own personal experiences. This also keeps the classroom clean and in order, which makes a positive and happy environment for the students and the teacher. (Word count: 114) 6
