Extra Credit Assignment: Developmental Theory By Samantha Baker I chose to focus on Jean Piaget’s theory of development. Piaget’s theory of development suggests that development, intelligence in particular changes when a child grows, and that child will create their own understanding of the world through environments and experiences. Piaget breaks his theory down into 4 key stages: 1. Sensorimotor: occurs from birth to age 2, this stage is where infants mostly know the world through their own sensory impressions and motor activities. Infants and toddlers acquire their knowledge through sensory experimental and manipulating objects. A key concept during this time is the idea of object permeance. Example: newborns grasps their hands and objects. 2. Preoperational: occurs from ages 2 to 7, this stage is where child begin to learn language but doesn’t not have the mental operations of concrete logical thinking. Imagination is a strong during this stage and encouraged as it helps develop abstract thinking. A key concept in this stage is conservation, this idea where you understand the quantity of an object doesn’t change even if the object has been altered. Example: You take two glasses filled with water, a tall glass and a short glass. Both are filled with the same amount of water; a child is more likely to point to the taller glass. 3. Concrete operational: this stage occurs from ages 7 to 11, during this stage begin to think logically and are no longer fooled by appearances. Example: Child can now understand the two glasses of water being the same. 4. Formal operational stage occurs starting around age 12, during this stage children begin to think logically and understand abstract concepts. Strategy and planning concepts become learned, and concepts can now be applied to each other.
I am studying to be a teacher so learning and understanding Piaget’s theory is quite important in my line of work. I can understand children’s thinking processes and I can in cooperate some of Piaget’s strategies into my teaching to help children learn better. It also helps me better understand the stage at which child is is in and their thought process. I can also children learn better by guiding them while still have them explore, as Piaget’s theory states child learn through different environments. Resources Perone, S. (2019).
