PSY 211 Module Three Activity Template In the Module Three Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Describe a specific behavior that you learned in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? [The specific behavior that I learned in response to an external stimulus was hoarding. The external stimulus that affected my behavior was my mother being irresponsible and not paying the bills or buying groceries to afford her alcoholism. I was aware of how this stimulus influenced my behavior by realizing why I hoarded the things I did. The biggest part of my hoard was food, because we did not always have enough growing up. In response to her neglect I hoarded to fill a void.] Explain whether the conditioned behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? o If negative, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? [This conditioned behavior was both positive and negative. On the positive side, I always had enough food to feed a small army. On the negative side I was suffering from anxiety, PTSD, and OCD because of my childhood. Which caused me to spend years in counseling before I realized that the hoarding was unnecessary. I have learned that I do not need to have an excessive amount of food in my house to make me happy. I have been able to buy only what I need to get me through a certain time frame, this allows me to have control over my anxiety and my cupboards to be just full enough not overflowing.] Describe a specific behavior that you changed in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? [The behavior that I changed was reassuring myself that I did not need to have all the things I hoarded to make me happy. I could have less things and still maintain control and not fear the consequences I suffered when I was younger because of my mother’s addiction. I am aware of the behavior that I changed in response to the stimulus because I now have more knowledge of the reason I hoarded to begin with. I hoarded because I was afraid that if I did not have things whether it be food or other objects that I would not be a good mother or provide the stability that my family deserved.] Explain whether the change in behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? 1
o If negative, and if it is something that you would like to change again, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? [The change in behavior is positive, I can continue to reinforce this by reassuring myself that I am not my mother. Also, by letting go of the past and moving forward and allowing myself to relax and be happy with what I have.] Explain why one of the behaviors described above is an example of classical conditioning (Watson), operant conditioning (Skinner), or neither of these. Address the following in your response: o If one of the above types of conditioning applies to your example, which specific features helped you to identify it? o Explain why this type of conditioning is most effective in learning or changing this behavior. o If neither type of conditioning applies to the behavior, why is this the case? Explain your response in terms of specific conditioning features (e.g., stimulus, response, association) or inherent aspects of the behavior itself. [Hording can be an example of classical conditioning. According to our text “Many emotional associations and attitudes, both positive and negative, are acquired through classical conditioning”. (Sigleman, 2017) So if I understand this correctly classical conditioning applies to my hoarding behavior because I hoarded in response to an external stimulus of my mother not providing me with the things I needed as a child. I suffered from the OCD because I had an obsessive need to have and not let go of the food in fear that if I let go I would be letting go of the control I had over my life. ] 2
