PSY 211 Module One Milestone Template In the Module One Milestone Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Compare the psychological factors that have influenced both April’s and Judi’s development. o Consider their cognitive and affective factors in your response. [Cognitive factors refer to the characteristics of the person that affect performance and learning. Affective factors refer to the emotions, moods, feelings, motivation, and attitude of an individual. April was raised in a healthy loving environment. Her parents provided her with emotional support and positive reinforcement, positively influencing her cognitive development. This has helped April to grow into an emotionally sound, and stable adult. Her affective development would also be positive because she was raised in a healthy loving environment, allowing her to build long lasting positive and emotionally stable relationships. Judy has been raised in an unhealthy environment with an abusive alcoholic father and a mentally unstable mother. Her cognitive factors would have been negatively influenced by her upbringing causing her conflict in her life. She barely finished high school and has not been successful in obtaining employment and found herself in unhealthy psychologically abusive relationships. This has caused Judy severe emotional distress. Her affective factor would be negatively influenced by her upbringing causing a lack of motivation and for her to be emotionally unstable in her adult life.] Compare the social factors that have influenced both April’s and Judi’s development. o Consider their relational and environmental factors in your response. [Relational factors refer to the relationships and interactions an individual has with others. Environmental factors refer to the physical and social environment in which an individual lives. April married her high school sweetheart, and has kept healthy, productive relationships in her personal and professional circles. She was raised in a happy healthy supportive environment. This has had a positive effect on her social development providing her with social bonds over many decades. Judy has very few friends, in her teen years she had psychologically abusive relationships causing her severe emotional distress. She was raised in an emotionally chaotic environment. This has negatively affected her social development and led her on a path of self-destruction causing her to abuse drugs and alcohol.] 1
Explain whether nature or nurture had a more significant role in April’s and Judi’s development. Support your answers with examples from the scenario. o Consider using biological, psychological, and social factors in your response. [In both April and Judi’s case nurture seemed to play a more significant role in their lives. I say this because the only thing they seem to have in common is their interest in classical music and volleyball. This could be something they inherited from their biological parents, meaning nurture played a role in this. They have both been raised in different environments and have led opposite lives. April has had much success in her relationships and is emotionally stable, while Judi has had multiple partners and is unable to find and sustain gainful employment. They have both raised children with opposite outcomes as well, April’s children have become successful lawyers and Judi’s oldest died from drug use and her nine-year-old is mentally unstable. They were raised in different environments, making them predisposed to certain aspects of physical, mental and emotional stability. April has lived a happy successful life and Judi has lived a troubled unstable life.] Explain why it is important to consider nature and nurture in combination throughout the life span when evaluating an individual’s well-being. [The nature versus nurture debate is an age-old discussion. According to writer Victor Katch, “nature” refers to the biological/genetic predispositions that impact one’s human traits — physical, emotional, and intellectual. “Nurture,” in contrast, describes the influence of learning and other “environmental” factors on these traits.” (Katch, V 2022) The combination of the two is crucial because it gives us a more knowledgeable understanding of human development and well-being. 2
