How does Joseph Ledoux’s research on the amygdala and the pre-frontal cortex relate to the work Shelly Taylor described in your Claremont Symposium video? Joseph Ledoux research and theories regarding amygdala and pre-frontal cortex is completely different than Shelly Taylor’s video. Ledoux doesn’t believe humans can’t control our emotions and Taylor believes we can control our emotions based on a happy environment. Shelly believes that an early environment or as she says risky families create a behavioral response that negatively affects coping, and health issues. Shelley believes it causes chronic health issues, but with social support can help alleviate health conditions. 2. What is the goal of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy is identifying, correctly dysfunctional thoughts or feelings that make you miserable. Not why but interested helping you challenge them. Modifying the thoughts, don’t believe everything you think. Prolong exposure reliving horror and helps the person overcome those fears of relieving. 3. Summarize neuroscientist Robert Sapolski’s take on the difference between Humans and Zebras when it comes to anxiety. Zebras does not get anxiety even after a near death experience. We as humans have a stress response. Chronic stress response as a zebra running for its life doesn’t stay with the zebra as it does with humans. Humans stay in that near death experience for prolonged periods of time which is anxiety. 4. In one sentence, summarize Gotlib’s research on depression. Depressed people especially sensitive to negative information. 5. How does depression influence the brain? Depression influences the brain by people who were depressed or who are prone to be depressed are biologically more reactive and have more cortisol. 6. How might anti-depressants influence the brain? The medication helps the brain not reduce the hippocampus. In depressed people the hippocampus is smaller and with long periods of depression it tends to get smaller, however anti depression medicine helps soothe the hippocampus from shrinking smaller.
