PSY 302 Spring B March 14, 2023 Walker - Chapter 1 What did Diener and colleagues find about the state of happiness throughout the world? Diener and colleagues researched college students who were disabled and healthy students to find out their moods. Both groups of students were equal in their moods (Walker et al., 2014 p.3). The study done between the residents of San Francisco and Detroit (Walker et al., 2014 p.4) which reflected that 93% happiness, even though the socioeconomic levels are vastly different. Life satisfaction is the greatest part of happiness which Walker describes it well by stating all the components; “physical health, economic, psychological state of mind, and economic and social welfare.” (Walker et al., 2014 p.5) Diener and her colleagues found globally that countries that scored below the mid-point of the scale were due to political corruption, poverty, and natural disasters. ((Walker et al., 2014 p.6-7) Diener and his colleagues found in their 2010 study that people were three times as positive then negative. Overall, the world is happy, which is quite amazing. (Walker et al., 2014 p.8-9) The Australian national survey had the same results as Diener. Positive events occurred more often than negative. (Walker et al., 2014 p.10) Cameron - Chapter 1 Describe the principle of “Positive Deviance” as applies to organizations and leadership. Positive deviance as it applies to leadership is a behavior that creates people within an organization to thrive and achieve, however not based on monetary scale. (Cameron, 2012 p.12) Another principle of positive deviance in relation to leadership is focusing on both weaknesses and strengths; as well as expressing complications with positive communication. (Cameron, 2012 p.13) Another way it applies is embracing the negative outcomes as a way of working through it to find solutions. This is also known as trial and an error, but being a good leader that continues to leads the organization to problem solve to overcome the dilemma without a negative perspective. (Cameron, 2012 p.13) Lastly, leaders believe that universal human virtues are possessed by all and they need in a manner that people are going to do the right thing. (Cameron, 2012 p.13) This portion of the positive deviance reminds karma. The Hindu belief that doing the right thing will lead to a positive life and afterlife. This type of leadership creates an environment that encourages human nature to be pure and positive, however it doesn’t allow room for people who may not be in that innately. Cameron, K. S. (2012).
