Describe a skills assessment that you have used or heard of in your time spent either studying or practicing in the field. Explain your experience with your chosen skills assessment. o What types of skills were being assessed? Evaluate whether that skills assessment was appropriate for the population in that situation. If it was not, explain why not. A skills assessment that I have observed and helped one of my BCBAs with was the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP). This assessment was completed with a client that was 3 years old which meant that he fell into learning level 3 of the VB-MAPP for assessment. The three different learning levels are Level 1: 0-18 months, Level 2: 18-30 months, and Level 3: 30-48 months. The VB-MAPP is an assessment tool used for children with autism and other individuals who have language delays. The VB-MAPP looks specifically at the client’s development of typical language and learning milestones across verbal components. It identifies the client’s common language, learning barriers, and evaluates the client’s ability to learn in a less restrictive educational environment through a transition assessment. This assessment examines 16 skills that are assessed across developmental levels. These include elementary verbal components, independent play, social play, visual perceptual and matching to sample, beginning academic skills, and grammatical and syntactical skills. This assessment provides a baseline level of performance, direction for intervention, a system for tracking skills acquisition, a tool for outcomes measures, and framework for curriculum planning. Since the client was a new client my BCBA and I went through different components of the VB- MAPP and assessed them. This skills assessment was appropriate for this client in this situation due to them being in the correct age group, new client and needing baseline data, the client had a language delayand the family hoed to one day have the child enter the educational system. Hi Jose! I have personally not used the ABLLS before but have had a chance to look through the assessment materials in the clinic. I also completed a permanent product for unrestricted hours researching the ABLLS and key parts of it. I like how this assessment shows the client strengths and weaknesses as I think it is important to see both as the practitioner and for stakeholders. There are what feels like many assessments out there and I am excited to hopefully learn about each. Great job Explaining the ABLLS along with providing information on when it would not be appropriate to use.
