Identifying functions of behavior is an important step in any development of creating an intervention plan. This step helps to reduce the implementation of ineffective behavioral support plans. For this discussion question, please read the case study of ShariLynn located on pages 111- 113 of your Functional Assessment text. Then, write a substantial discussion post on the following: Identify the function of ShariLynn's challenging behaviors. To do this, analyze the ABC data found on pages 112-113. Provide a rationale for why you selected that function, after you have identified the function of ShariLynn's behavior. Provide an explanation as to why the other functions are not applicable for this case. After analyzing the ABC data for ShariLynn we can conclude that the function of the challenging behaviors to be escape/avoidance. The function of escape and avoidance in this situation includes escaping having to go to the resource room, speech therapy, and reading in front of peers. It was noted that ShariLynn enjoys her regular class, the teacher in the resource room and the speech language pathologist but does not like leaving the regular class because she is afraid that other students will make fun of her. It was stated that the frequency of the refusal and noncompliant behavior is increasing and expanding to other activities, routines, and settings. After looking at the ABC data it showed evidence to support that the behavior is maintained by escape/avoidance. Though ShariLynn enjoys and likes her teachers she continually provides excuses, refusal, and the consequence of these behavior results in ShariLynn being able to avoid/escape the demand placed or aversive stimulus. The function of ShariLynn’s behavior would not be considered attention, tangibles, or sensory. The evidence from the ABC data taken by her teacher proves that she is not obtaining more attention than she was already receiving, she is not asking, receiving, or being given preferred items or other things and is not gaining any automatic reinforcement. Though she is being relieved of her fear of being made fun of by her peers this is not a confirmed thing that happened.
