Identify two strengths you bring to addiction counseling and how you gained those strengths. Two strengths that I would bring to addiction counseling are that I have great interpersonal skills. The ability to listen and understand a client verbally and non-verbally will be vital when working in this setting. Another great skill that I hold is that I am very empathetic. Being empathetic allows me to connect to individuals at their core, possibly allowing more work to be done because I see and understand where they are. Identify one area where you might struggle in the field of addiction counseling (examples might be personal experiences, bias, lack of education, etc.), and why this area might be a challenge for you. One area of challenge that may arise for me is not having enough education in addictions. I have not personally worked in this area before. I had one course during my undergraduate over 10 years ago. I would need to be more educated on this subject matter to better understand and help clients of this demographic. Does your state/country have certification or licensure for addiction counseling? Provide the website if so. In Michigan, they have a variety of options to choose from. The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals website list the following: CAADC- Certified Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor CADC-Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor. CCS - Certified Clinical Supervisor CPS - Certified Prevention Specialist CPC - Certified Prevention Consultant CPRM - Certified Peer Recovery Mentor CCJP-M - Certified Criminal Justice Professional Michigan The website where this information can be found is at https://mcbap.com/mcbap-certifications/Links to an external site. Share whether addiction counseling is a field you would consider for your counseling career and explain why or why not.
During my undergraduate years, I was interested and took one class. I think what inspired me was seeing my uncle who has struggled with addiction for over 20 years. However, I do not think this is a career path I would choose. I would like to have the basic knowledge and wisdom to point out if a client is dealing with this and then make a referral as necessary.
