Post the following: Identify two strengths you bring to addictions counseling and how you gained those strengths. o The first strength that comes to mind is my ability to have a non-judgemental stance. In regards to addictions counseling, this strength is important because it comes from my personal experience with addictive behaviors. Specifically, my brother has had issues with substance abuse. When he was around the age of five, he experienced severe trauma, which he was not aware of until he did EMDR Therapy. From that point on, he quit the therapy, and has been stuck in this cycle of substance abuse for 13 years now. I know that he is doing his best, given his circumstances. o Another strength of mine is my personal experience with substance abuse. From what I know, addictions can also be covert, in which the covert addictions are not ones that are commonly viewed as an addiction. I had this revelation for myself because I drink a lot of caffeine and it's something that I abuse on a regular basis. I also know that it helps me get that if I tried to slow down, the comedown would be miserable and I fear that I wouldn't be capable of handling everything on my plate. Identify one area where you might struggle in the field of addictions counseling (examples might be personal experiences, bias, lack of education, etc.), and why this area might be a challenge for you. o I think I would struggle with conflict in addictions counseling. Considering my own experience, I can validate myself, and I need to consider my own bias when my future clients justify addictive behaviors. I feel like I could miss an opportunity to bring something to light and worry about the client feeling like I am judging their decisions. Does your state/country have certification or licensure for addictions counseling? Provide the website if so. https://ksbsrb.ks.gov/professions/addiction-counselorsLinks to an external site. Share whether addictions counseling is a field you would consider for your counseling career, and explain why or why not. o I would consider addictions counseling because of my experience in a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) program. I had both group and individual sessions every week for nearly two years. Many of the group members expressed issues with drugs, alcohol, impulsive spending, etc. There was a time when some group
members were talking about smoking weed during our break and the group leader was very direct about the terms and conditions of remaining in group. One of those was that it was against those conditions to enable addictive behaviors with other group members. DBT is almost entirely education based, and there were many different skills that we learned in order to tolerate the distress in the moment. I am grateful for the education and healing I received in that DBT program and I feel like my knowledge could be helpful in addictions counseling.
