PSY 211 Module Three Activity Template In the Module Three Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Describe a specific behavior that you learned in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? I have been in and out of toxic and abusive relationships since I was in high school. A specific behavior that I learned in these relationships is to be quiet and do what they say because it was easier than standing up for myself and causing a fight. At the time I knew my behavior was being influenced because I was no longer the outgoing, happy girl I’d always been. I was too scared to stand up for myself because I didn’t think I deserved any better. Explain whether the conditioned behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? o If negative, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? This conditioned behavior was very negative. It has made communication very hard for me, especially in relationships. To change this behavior, I first need to get away from toxic environments. Second, I need to start telling the people in my life how I feel. And I need to work on my self-love and believe that I deserve better than what I have settled for in the past. Describe a specific behavior that you changed in response to an external stimulus. Address the following in your response: o What external stimulus affected your behavior? o Were you aware that your behavior was being influenced by the stimulus? If so, how did you know? A behavior that I changed is starting the day off negative. I started doing drugs when I was 15 and for a long time, waking up was awful. It was just a reminder that I was alive another day. I started going to Alcoholics Anonymous when I was 20 and they taught us to wake up and make a gratitude list to help us start the day off positively. At the time, I was unaware of how much I was being influenced by A.A. I noticed myself being a little happier. Looking back, it made a huge difference in my life. Explain whether the change in behavior was positive or negative. o If positive, in what ways can you continue to reinforce this behavior? o If negative, and if it is something that you would like to change again, what are some steps you can take to change this behavior? This change in behavior was very positive. Being able to wake up grateful for another day is huge for someone like me. For years, I had a negative outlook on everything and now I can see the brighter side of life. 1
Explain why one of the behaviors described above is an example of classical conditioning (Watson), operant conditioning (Skinner), or neither of these. Address the following in your response: o If one of the above types of conditioning applies to your example, which specific features helped you to identify it? o Explain why this type of conditioning is most effective in learning or changing this behavior. o If neither type of conditioning applies to the behavior, why is this the case? Explain your response in terms of specific conditioning features (e.g., stimulus, response, association) or inherent aspects of the behavior itself. The behavior that I learned from being in toxic, abusive relationships is an example of operant conditioning. It is an example of operant conditioning because the stimuli, toxic and abusive relationships, influenced me to learn a behavior. When I would stand up for myself it would cause fights which would make my life harder. As time went on, I learned to keep my mouth shut. Through operant conditioning, individuals can learn new skills and all kinds of habits, good and bad (Sigelman, 2017). This is the most effective conditioning because you determine the motive and consequence to help break a habit or change a behavior. References 2
