PSY 211 Module Eight Activity Template In the Module Eight Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview, Scenario, and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Applying Piaget’s concept of perspective-taking in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is perspective-taking so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o How might seeing Jasmine’s situation from her point of view inspire her to advocate for herself? Perspective-taking is critical to my conversation with Jasmine because it better helps me understand what she is going through. Pay inequity is real and seeing her situation from her point of view would help me empathize with her. Having an outside perspective could allow Jasmine to see that she is being treated wrong and that she should speak to her supervisor about it. Applying Goleman’s concept of empathy in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is empathy so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o In Jasmine’s case, what do you believe is the main difference between perspective- taking and empathy? Empathy is critical to my conversation with Jasmine because it helps me put myself in her shoes and see how she is feeling. It helps me better understand that she does deserve more pay for the hard work that she’s putting in. She is good for the business, and she should be paid for her effort and experience. Perspective-taking is imagining yourself in that person’s shoes, and empathy is an emotional response to how someone is feeling. Applying Gilligan’s views on morality in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is moral reasoning so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o According to Gilligan, which type of morality best aligns with Jasmine’s situation: care- based morality, justice-based morality, or both? Explain your response. Moral reasoning is critical to my conversation with Jasmine because she must decide what is right from wrong. I think that both types of morality align with Jasmine’s situation. I think that it is care- based because her feelings and pride are hurt that someone undeserving is getting paid more than her. I think that it is justice-based because she knows that her pay is unfair and unequal, and she wants what is right. As you wrap up your conversation with Jasmine, integrate the perspectives of Piaget, Goleman, and Gilligan by answering the following questions: o According to Piaget, what is one factor that could inhibit your ability to take Jasmine’s perspective? How might Goleman’s concept of empathy mitigate this factor? 1
o How does Goleman’s concept of empathy relate to Piaget’s concept of perspective- taking in your conversation with Jasmine? o How do Gilligan’s views on morality relate to Goleman’s concept of empathy in your conversation with Jasmine? According to Piaget, one factor that could inhibit my ability to take Jasmine’s perspective is not being able to fully understand how she feels. We are only able to make inferences about how she feels. Goleman’s concept of empathy mitigates this factor because talks about understanding someone’s emotions on a deeper level. Piaget’s concept of perspective-taking and Goleman’s concept of empathy relate to my conversation with Jasmine because it is all about understanding her situation and how she feels so that I can help her. Gilligan suggests that women typically prioritize care over justice. His view on morality relates to Goleman’s concept of empathy because we are trying to help Jasmine in a situation where she had to decide whether care or justice was her motivation to fight pay inequity. 2
