Describe one of the research-based methods for conducting preference assessment. Explain why preference assessments are conducted in ABA interventions. Explain the risks involved with not conducting a preference assessment. One research-based methods for conducting a preference assessment is Multiple stimulus. This includes multiple stimuli with replacement (MSW). This preference assessment involves an array of 3 or more items (stimuli) on the table for the learner to choose from. MSW is good for learners who are able to scan and choose from an array. Though this preference assessment is more time consuming it is also good for learners who have difficulties relinquishing preferred items. In MSW the client is presented an array of items and told to pick one. After the client pick an item, the client has some time to interact with the item. In the next trial the chosen item remains in the array and the items that were not selected are replaced with all new items. One limitation to this preference assessment is that it may not give relative preference if the client continues to select the same item over and over. Preference assessments are conducted in ABA interventions to identify clients preferred items, activities, edibles, and reinforcers. After identifying the clients preferences behavior analyst can prioritize these preferred items to create an effective behavior intervention and plan individualized to the client. Identifying reinforcers and preferences assists in motivating the client to engage in desired behaviors which can help increase or decrease targeted behaviors. If a preference assessment is not conducted this could lead to decrease motivation, increase challenging behaviors, ineffective treatment, and could create an aversive environment. Preference assessments are important for engaging and motivating the client if presented with an aversive stimuli or item the client could be less motivated to participate in activities or instructions.
