Indirect assessments derive from recollections, reconstructions, or subjective ratings of events. Examples of an indirect assessment could include interviews, checklists, and even rating scales. In this discussion, we focus on behavioral interviews. Discuss at least three interpersonal skills needed for an interview. Why are these skills important for effective implementation of a behavioral interview? Why do practitioners typically avoid 'why' questions in a behavioral interview? When conducting an indirect assessment, it is important to have interpersonal skills to implement an effective behavioral interview. In my opinion the top 3 interpersonal skills needed for an indirect interview are being an active listener, being able to communicate effectively, and engage in empathy. Incorporating these three skills into an interview allows for an effective behavioral interview because it allows us to look past our own opinions and gather an understanding for the clients’ past behaviors. It also allows us to gather information to predict future performance. By providing empathy we are providing a safe and confidential environment for stakeholders to share accurate information. With active listening and communicating effectively we are building a relationship and rapport with the stakeholders which will allow for trust to occur and a more open environment. I believe that practitioners typically avoid “why” questions in a behavioral interview because they could come across harsh or judgmental to stakeholders. I also believe that “why” questions do not provide practitioners with a definitive answer or examples of the behaviors. Capella University. (2022).
