Strengths: 1. One strength I can bring to addictions counseling is my empathetic personality. I am a natural empathetic person and bringing this skill to addictions counseling can help a client feel unjudged and comfortable opening about their disease. This strength was ingrained in me naturally. I have a strong love and understanding for all people, no matter what their background is. 2. Another strength I can bring to addictions counseling is the ability to listen and really hear my clients. Listening to their stories and struggles is important in building the therapeutic alliance, which helps with gaining trust and providing the client with a chance for success. An area of struggle: One area of struggle for me would be my lack of education on the subject. It would be important to me as an addiction counselor to gain some certifications and continuing education so I can help my clients appropriately. This would be a challenge for me because I have no background in addictions counseling, and I have not had many connections with personal addictions in my life for me to understand it as well as others who have more experience. Certification/Licensure: In the state of Michigan, it is not required to have a specialized addictions license or certification, but there are options about gaining certifications to better specialize yourself in this area. Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) is a place where people can gain certifications and further educate themselves on addiction. https://mcbap.com/Links to an external site. Is addictions counseling a field I would consider? Addictions counseling is not my first choice for specialization. I think due to my lack of knowledge in the field and knowing that I would be a better counselor in other areas is why I would not choose this as a first option. My dream when I went back to school for my masters was to specialize in children and eventually become a registered play therapist. Addiction counseling is something that I would be interested in learning more about but not my first pick to specialize in.
