My specialization is within Forensic Psychology. I have a unique perspective in this specialty. I completed my undergraduate studies in Psychology and just happened upon Criminal Justice, specifically with juveniles, and have been invested in this area of expertise for almost 20 years. When learning about the Criminal Justice System, trainers and court systems tended to lean towards Cognitive Psychology. Evaluations, interviews, and regular interactions were geared to exploring and understanding the processes of the mind. A person’s intentions and purposes were believed to be what makes their conscious choices and decisions about how they interpret the mind and body dualism (Capella University, 2023). While Cognitive Psychology studies areas such as memory, decision making and intellectual development, to really develop patterns of change, I believe Forensic Psychology is best supported through the Behaviorism school of thought. Behaviorism allows for the direct observation of people’s behaviors. Through these observations such behaviors as shaped learning and reinforcement schedules, understanding an individual’s learning performance and habits, leads to the ability to develop conditioned responses (Henley, 2018). The most effective of individuals involved in the Juvenile Justice System is through modeling and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that allows youth to eliminate an unwanted response(s) to a negative stimulus such as with their decision-making pertaining to relationships, substance use and overall criminal activity. Behaviorism allows for the understanding of behavior and through its principles and values of understanding the behavior(s) and explaining the environmental stimuli of the observable responses, likewise, it is through these principles that measurable and observable research conducted demonstrates and understands the predictability of behavior through the control and manipulation of different environmental factors to modify behavior, which is impactful for negative criminal behavior (Henley, 2018; Luna, 2022). The importance of Behaviorism within the Juvenile Justice System is critical to understanding the importance of the environmental influences and factors that are presented to youth, such as parents, education, substance use, peer groups and how they are attaining negative habits through repetition and therefore, reinforcement. Working to modify their environmental factors, through the use of alternative school and in some cases, out of home placement, can provide an environment with new stimuli in order for them to acquire preferred societal habits through positive reinforcement.
