Adhd in the Classroom Abstract Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a disorder that affects between three to five percent of the children in our schools today. It is vital that teachers and parents learn to recognize signs of ADHD in children. In doing so they learn to modify the structure of their classroom and use techniques to help children succeed in school, specifically in learning to write. This disorder makes it difficult for children to complete many different tasks such as taking their thoughts and vocalizing them effectively on paper. There are many aides that can be implemented to help these children succeed in writing. There also are tips on how to organize your classroom and your students. There is a disorder affecting between ...show more content... Note that the DSM has nine sub–criteria for each of the three factors listed, and multiple symptoms must be present for a consistent six months to be evidence of ADHD. If teachers or parents view such behavior, they should recommend the child be professionally assessed for ADHD through a series of written tests. Parents and teachers cannot pass on a diagnosis of ADHD on their own. How ADHD affects learning to write Imagine being a child with these three factors: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Think of the difficulty faced sitting still for thirty minutes and simply writing thoughts on paper. Children with ADHD have difficulty finding the right words to put their ideas to paper. With their difference in thought process, their writing may make perfect sense to them, but be incomprehensible to another reader. Simply sitting still at a desk to preparing to write is a challenge in itself. Therefore, if parents or teachers suspect a child may have ADHD, it is in the child's best interest to have them tested and professionally diagnosed with the disorder. In doing so, steps can be taken to adapt teaching methods to the child's needs in order to best help them learn. Teaching Strategies Organizing the classroom One way in which teachers can improve students focus is in the manner in which the classroom is organized. Essay on ADHD ADHD Upon shadowing a fourth grade teacher at Deer Ridge Elementary School, I decided to talk with her about the students in her classroom. Mrs. Riley first set the scene of the school for me by stating that it was in the southwest suburban area of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and this particular school was not hurting for money. She then began to explain the different children in her classroom. There were twenty–eight students from a variety of different backgrounds. There were also two students with ADHD . My first thought was, "What exactly is ADHD?" and, "Would these two children stick out from the rest of the students in the classroom?". These questions are commonly asked by people who are unfamiliar with ADHD, ...show more content... It serves as the brain's command center, that helps with "editing" behavior, resisting distractions, and developing awareness (NIMH, 1996). The caudate nucleus and globus pallidus, which are more commonly known as the basal ganglia, are located near the middle of the brain. They are "at least two of the clusters of nerve cells deep in the brain" (Barkley, 1998). The caudate nucleus and globus pallidus translate the commands, given by the prefrontal cortex , into action (NIMH, 1996). Researchers have found that these parts of the brain, which are in the right hemisphere of the brain, are smaller in children with ADHD than in children without this disorder (Barkley, 1998). The right hemisphere of the brain is normally larger than the left hemisphere, but some researchers have thought that due to this abnormality in ADHD children that this could be a cause of the disorder (Barkley, 1998). Another hypothesis that has been considered for the cause of ADHD is genetic inheritance. It is stated in Barkley's 1998 article in Scientific American that, "ADHD is a polygenic disorder–that is, more than one gene contributes to it." There has been many studies done with twins to help support this hypothesis. One of the largest studies was conducted by Helene Gjone, Jon M. Sundet, and Jim Stevenson, in which it involved many identical twins who had inherited the same genes. This Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

ADHD and Its Treatments Essay examples The purpose of this research was to describe and understand Attention–Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the most effective treatment options that are available today. ADHD is a mental health disorder that affects 3–9% of the population in ways that, if left untreated, can wreak havoc on the mind of the sufferer. It makes concentration difficult, large tasks seem insurmountable, and causes impulsive and hyperactive tendencies. Fortunately, research and experiments have led to new and effective treatments to help those who suffer from this disorder (Dupaul 8). This research examined journal articles and internet sources on the topic to help unlock the complexities of the disorder through scientific research . It also was a way to ...show more content... It was once thought that brain injury was the primary culprit for the disorder, but this theory has since been disproved by studies that illustrate only an insignificant number of ADHD sufferers have had brain trauma. Attention disorders often run in families, so there are likely to be genetic influences. Studies indicate that 25 percent of the close relatives in the families of ADHD children also have ADHD, whereas the rate is about 5 percent in the general population. Recent studies have also focused their attention on the part of the cerebrum known as the frontal lobes. This is the part of the brain responsible for solving problems, planning, understanding the behavior of others, and restraining our impulses. In 2002, Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Child Psychiatry Branch studied 139 children over a 10 year span and found, through MRI and other brain testing technologies, that the children had 3–4% smaller brain volumes than those of normal, healthy children. Although MRI brain scans show promise as a diagnostic tool, scientists stress they cannot be used effectively for that purpose (Surgeon Gen 5–8). Psychologists and Psychiatrists have recognized several different types of ADHD. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–IV), a tool commonly used by professionals to diagnose mental disorders, illustrates three patterns of behavior to note when Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Research Paper on Adhd RESEARCH PAPER ON ADHD Abstract Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral development disorder among children. In the United States there are at least 2 million grade school children that are diagnosed with the disorder (Dupper, 2003). ADHD is determined to be one of the most common development disorders in children (Barlow & Durand, 2009). This paper will discuss the different aspects of ADHD, its symptoms, common traits, and the known treatments being used by clinicians. Moreover, the paper will also touch on the important things to consider when dealing with ADHD, particularly in the area of social work. By doing so, it will determine why social work should be an integral part of the diagnosis and ...show more content... To get a clearer picture of the disorder, APA subdivided the symptoms according to its three most important traits, inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). As most of the symptoms of ADHD may typically be present in normal behavioral development, APA established that only when six or more of the symptoms are present in a child can he or she be considered as suffering from ADHD (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Furthermore, the child should also exhibit these symptoms within a period of 6 months or more to completely confirm the occurrence of the disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Inattention is one of the distinguishable traits of ADHD (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). A child suffering from the symptoms of inattention in ADHD would probably lag behind schoolwork, have problems with communicating, and would struggle with cognitive activities like reading and comprehension. APA listed a total of 9 symptoms that are crucial to identifying ADHD in children (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Following is the list of these symptoms and their brief explanation: 1) Oftentimes a child will fail to give close attention to details (American Psychiatric Association, 20000. Essay On ADHD Treatment Liberty Kent Kade Parry English 1010 November 15, 2017 ADHD Treatment: Conventional or Differential Attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a well–known and much debated neurological disorder. ADHD is the reoccurring pattern of inattention where a child wanders off task and has difficulty sustaining focus. Other signs of ADHD include hyperactivity –impulsivity where a child seems to move about constantly, and excessively fidget, tap, or talk. ADHD may also cause the child to make hasty actions that occur in the moment without thinking about the potential harm. There is no cure, but there are many different treatment options for children with ADHD. Many are questioning, reviewing, and comparing treatments within many ...show more content... Parent viewpoint: There is no single determined cause of ADHD. However, originally ADHD was thought to be caused by "bad parenting." Psychologists believed that ADHD was caused by a child's lax environment and that permissible parents were the cause. New research has come to show that although children with ADHD benefit from added structure and daily routines, lack of structure and discipline does not cause ADHD. Many psychologists now believe that since it can be difficult for some parents to implement a change in their parenting style for ADHD, that it is the disorder that causes bad parenting. Parents with ADHD children are quickly forced to change a lot of the ways in which they operate in their home and in discipline, especially if it is not their first child. Most of the time parents are able to adjust, but in a lot of severe cases it becomes very difficult. The different treatment options can either hinder or help parents in raising children with ADHD. Many choose to have their children medicated, and others may take the less traditional psychosocial route. In the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology Coletti et al. described a focus group of parents that volunteered to share their personal thoughts on the options they had tried. The accounts suggest that multiple social, Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Essay On Adhd In The Classroom Children who are diagnosed with ADHD struggle with managing behavior in school environments. As research has shown, students have difficulty paying attention and can be disruptive in class. This often leads to a decline in their academics and can hurt future academic achievements. There are a number of tools, programs, contracts, and classes that are available to students with ADHD. Along with a lack of attention and an abundance of hyperactivity, "twenty to thirty percent of ADHD children have an associated learning disorder of reading , spelling, writing, and arithmetic" (Daley & Birchwood, 2010). It can be difficult, as a teacher, to manage a classroom with children with ADHD. It is important that teachers, parents, and students, understand the opportunities available to them to help the child succeed. ADHD can be diagnosed in children at a ...show more content... There are different strategies and methods that are useful when adapting to a general education classroom. Daley & Birchwood (2010) describes peer and parent tutoring, task modifications, strategy training, and homework focused interventions, as being most efficient in accommodating children with ADHD. "Peer tutoring is a strategy whereby an ADHD individual is paired with a peer tutor to work on certain academic activity, with the peer tutor providing one on one instruction and assistance at the ADHD individuals own pace" (Daley & Birchwood, 2010). Implementing this strategy in a classroom allows the teacher to effectively teach the class as a whole and for the child to not fall behind in the curriculum. When the child returns to the home setting, it is most beneficial if the child receives parent tutoring as well. Essay on Overview of ADHD Attention–Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD, is the most common psychiatric condition effecting 9.5% of school–aged children in the United States (intuniv, 2013). If the disorder goes untreated, it will cause more long–term side effects and difficulties for the individual as an adult. Adults who have this condition face several adversities in every day life, such as impulsive behavior, low self–esteem and poor work performance. People are not aware of the complications that come with ADHD in adults. Not knowing the symptoms of the disease can cause people to not be sympathetic when they are interacting with someone with disorder. First, there are two different types of ADHD. An individual can be diagnosed with ...show more content... Known to have a high energy level and drive that helps them with determination to succeed. Many children with ADHD may struggle in everyday tasks, but most are intellectually and artistically gifted. Celebrities such as Will Smith, Justin Timberlake, Michael Phelps, and Jim Carrey have been diagnosed with this disorder and it has pushed them to get where they are today (Goodin, 2013). Only doctors or trained health care providers can properly diagnose ADHD. To diagnose the disorder, several observations are done in different settings and at different times. Doctors look to see if the symptoms are present in at least two different life situations, for instance, at school, at home, or in social situations ("How is ADHD diagnosed"). The sooner the disorder can be diagnosed the sooner the individual can be put on medications to help minimize the symptoms. "Detailed studies of the behavior of hyperactive children and increasing knowledge of brain function have changed the concepts of the fundamental behavioral and neuropathic deficits underlying the disorder". (Springer, 2010) Is ADHD a real disorder? Studies are showing that ADHD is starting to be over diagnosed due to increased perfectionism among parents and teachers who expect more self–control from children than is possible at young ages (Frances, 2011). The diagnosis of the disorder has sometimes been used as a way to pacify parents who are having discipline problems with their children and want a quick Get more content on StudyHub.Vip
Adults With Adhd Essay Did you know that Attention–deficit/Hyperactivity disorder is a very common mental illness, there is up to 3 million cases of adhd a year in the united states alone. ADHD is a serious mental illness and can cause many problems to your health. Such as compulsive eating, low self–esteem, substance abuse, anxiety, and chronic stress. ADHD can also affect your surroundings as well, you may lose attention in important lectures or mess up on a quiz, and it can make you misunderstand a situation socially and that can cause problems within relationships. ADHD seems to affect not only your mental health but your physical health and your relationships around you as well. After finding this information, I believe that ADHD is underdiagnosed in ...show more content... And lastly, doctors are not only afraid of giving an adult with ADHD medicine, they are also afraid of over diagnosing them which can be very costly and have negative side effects. As Psychology Today says, "Indeed, many claim that ADHD is overdiagnosed and that stimulants are overprescribed. Psychiatrists are afraid of becoming one of these doctors who "overprescribe". Despite the fact that stimulants are the standard of treatment for Adult ADD, whether or not someone has ADD should not hinge on the treatment, but instead on the proper assessment and diagnosis." (Psychology Today p.1) This shows that doctors and psychiatrists are afraid of both diagnosing and over diagnosing adults because of what the medicine will do to them and that the stimulants can cause negative side effects and can worsen a person's mental state. All this shows that doctors and psychiatrists are afraid that they will mess up on diagnosing, overdiagnose, and will end up not diagnosing a person which doesn't help avoid the problem at all. Another reason why ADHD is underdiagnosed in adults is that children are seen as more important than adults and that people believe the myth that if you treat ADHD early on, that it'll go away when the person grows up, "If left untreated in childhood or adulthood, the symptoms of Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

ADHD Research Essay ADHD Research Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disability in which children consistently show one or more of the following characteristics over a period of time. (1) Inattention, (2) hyperactivity, and (3) impulsivity (Kirst–Ashman, Zastrow 2004). Children who are inattentive have difficulty focusing on any one thing and may get bored with a task after only a few minutes. Children who are hyperactive show high levels of physical activity, almost always seeming to be in motion. Children who are impulsive have difficulty curbing their reactions and don't do a good job of thinking before they act. Depending on the characteristics that children with ADHD display, they can be ...show more content... They may say the child is "always on the go" or "never seems to listen". Many children with ADHD are difficult to discipline, have low frustration tolerance, and have problems in peer relations. Other common characteristics of children with ADHD include general immaturity and clumsiness. Although signs of ADHD are often present in the preschool years, their classification often doesn't take place until the elementary school years (Kirst–Ashman, Zastrow, 2004). The increase academic and social demands of formal schooling, as well as stricter standards for behavior control often illuminate the problems of the child with ADHD. Elementary school teachers typically report that this type of child has difficulty in working independently, completing seat work, and organizing work. Restlessness and distractibility are also very common. These problems are more likely to be observed in repetitive or taxing tasks, or tasks the child perceives to be boring, such as completing worksheets or doing homework. Estimates suggest that ADHD decreases in only about one–third of adolescence (santrock, 2003). It's now being recognized that these problems may continue into adulthood. Definitive causes of ADHD have not been found. However, a number of causes have been proposed, such as low levels of certain neurotransmitter (chemical messengers in the Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Adult ADHD Essay The following paper deals with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Adults. The paper will mainly focus on the symptoms of ADHD along with diagnosis of it. It will show how at least some research demonstates that adult and child ADHD are two different things and should be treated as such. In the process it will higlhight the what at times can be conflicting nature of adult ADHD research. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder in which people have trouble focusing. Individuals are generally abnormally hyper and have a hard time keeping still. Along with that they have a tendency to be impulsive and so may at times act on the hyperactivity. For example a college student suffering from it may have a hard ...show more content... In addition to symptoms of ADHD being present by the age of seven the symptoms must affect the person's life in a number of settings. In addition the symptoms have to not be explained by another mental disorder. If it only occurs alongside a psychotic mood disorder it is not considered ADHD. Inattention in ADHD is classified as making easily avoidable mistakes and ignoring details, usually do to not paying attention. It can happen in any number of settings( Surman, 2013). For example an accountant suffering from some of the innatention aspects of ADHD may not notice they forget to put a decimal point in a number resulting in a much higher number then shoud have been expected. The average adult may catch the mistake but someone someone with at least part of the innatetion aspect will likely move on without a thought in the world. Hyperactivity is demonstrated by inabiltiy to sit still and the need to get up from one's seat to move around. Impulsivity shows itself in a person's inabilty to resist acting on their urges. Usually the person will jump in front of others in a conversation. the person may at random pick up things and start messing with them. For a person to be diagnosised with ADHD a number of the DSM–IV–TR's critera must be met. While symptoms of ADHD may be present early on in a person's life other criteria from the DSM may not appear until later on. This could be the result of changes in Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Essay on Adhd As a child, I have always been taught to trust the doctor because, "The doctor knows best". As time went on and now a mother, I find that statement to be very misleading. You always hear and read different stories about doctors' who diagnose a patient's problem to early, and those who just make mistakes and misdiagnose a patient completely. That's why I choose to do my paper on Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, better known as ADHD. According to Carey, 1 to 2 percent of children likely have a brain malfunctions that warrant classification of something like ADHD, but that another 5 to 10 percent who are diagnosed with ADHD should not be (Carey, 2002). ADHD is a psychological disorder in which the individual shows one or more of the ...show more content... As a child I know that seeing a therapist, just someone to talk to did me good. I mean it took me awhile to get us to the idea of telling a totally stranger my business but eventually I came around. Once you establish a certain level of trust with you therapist, hopefully the issue at hand can be identified. Communication with your child is vital and often over looked. To me I would consider that one of the ways to understand what going on in your child's busy brain. They might need to express their energy in a different way from you and I, just to concentrate on a task. Certainly I would rather my child get sweaty from running around the block a couple times to we're off some energy than to be a "zombie". So before you take your child to see a psychiatrist and they get prescribed a pill. Just know that poor judgment of parenting can not only have a mental effect on your child but also a physical effect. Barkley and others (2002) noted that in the study that they conducted from youth with ADHD experience a higher dropout rate from school, fewer friends, becoming pregnant as a teen, contracting a sexual transmitted infection, and engaging in antisocial behaviors. To me that solution is lazy on the parent's behalf and should be consider as bad parenting. I mean it isn't the child's fault that the parent doesn't have enough time, or lack the improper skills to raise a child. In conclusion, Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

ADHD Rhetorical Analysis The Center for Disease Control and Prevention posted a webpage providing information about Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder in November of 2016. In the page's context, the writer provides facts, signs and symptoms, the different types of ADHD, causes, treatments, diagnoses, managing symptoms, where to receive help, and managing ADHD as an adult.
