Possible Reasons for Withdrawal A counselor must ensure the client is fully engaged during the treatment process. If a counselor notices the client withdrawing, addressing the concern and identifying some strategies to re- engage the client is vital. A client may begin to withdraw due to a lack of competence (cultural competence), safeguarding the integrity of the therapeutic relationship and collaboration ( American Counseling Association, 2014). Some other reasons a client may begin to withdraw and engage in “Yes,” but behaviors could be due to the following: Denial of a problem (sustain talk) Social and religious stigmas Fear or change, judgment, unaddressed trauma Finances Bad experience with counselors in the past Misconceptions about treatment Strategies to Re-engage Clients Counselors should always respond empathically and probe the client to help them identify their blind spots (Egan et al., 2019). When the client engages in "Yes," but behaviors, probing and summarizing will help go in-depth with their thoughts. An approach to use to help re-engage a client would be to use Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). REBT helps challenge clients' irrational and self-defeating beliefs while learning to manage their behaviors, thoughts, and emotions. Some implementation techniques include the ABC framework, negotiating, compromising, and eclecticism (Ellis et al., 2014). References American Counseling Association. (2014). ACA code of ethics .
