2 Lens Exploration Mental well-being is the topic of wellness I chose for this module activity. Mental well- being is one of the aspects I have heard about and learned about in school and in the community. In school, I learned that mental wellness is a core concept in achieving wellness. As Linden & Stuart (2020) illustrates, mental well-being involves a situation that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, learn and work well, be essential members of society, and know their abilities. Achieving mental well-being can be achieved by setting individual self-worth, connecting with others, being physically active, learning new skills, mindfulness, and helping others. Attaining mental well-being is filled with various advantages to achieve a happy life. Mental well-being is a concept that William Sweetser first introduced in the 19 th century. During this time, many beliefs existed that mental well-being was related to supernatural powers. As William explained, mental well-being could lead to illness when a person is attacked by supernatural powers (Graiver, 2021). During the late 19 th century, there was a growing understanding of what mental well-being entails, and scientists connected it with daily activities and behaviors that can necessitate it. With mental illness resulting from a lack of wellness, it was noted that it could be improved through meditation and behavioral therapy. Based on the humanities lens, mental well-being is a discipline that focuses on the human condition of mind. Mental well-being is a state of mind characterized by peace in the soul and spirit. Through the mental well-being topic, it is possible to understand various individual characters that dictate certain behaviors (Koo & Vizer, 2019). Various cultures have different perspectives on mental well-being. Some cultures still believe mental well-being is connected to supernatural powers. Besides, some other cultures see mental well-being as related to live or
3 dead relatives of their children. Most people emphasize the attainment of mental well-being because it could result in the attainment of wellness. Within the natural world, mental well-being is connected with how nature affects people's wellness. As Hubscher-Davidson (2020) elaborates in their study, mental well-being is related to the environmental situation in which a person exists. A person in a quiet and relaxed environment will likely have mental well-being that results in their wellness. Self-satisfaction is another factor that is related to the achievement of mental well-being. Within the social science lens, mental well-being is related to the interactive part of human beings. Mental well-being can be attained through having supportive and loving friends and family. Positive interpersonal relationships help create an environment that brings positivity to people's minds. The major social structures that impact mental well-being are employment, social support, and socioeconomic conditions. A person who is employed has mental wellness compared to a jobless one. Having social support positively impacts individual mental well-being.
