Hello class! In my last discussion I wrote about a machine that monitors brain activity with algorithms to take the guesswork out of anesthesia. Many anesthesiologists have given patients more than needed when it comes to deciding on dosage. They do this because the last thing the doctor or patient wants is to wake up while having surgery. It is tricky to find the exact precise amount for a patient, but the new technology brain machine has proven to deliver the precise amount without oversedation. This is great because too much anesthesia can be dangerous for patients. When I look at this technology through a social science lens I can see where some people may not like the idea of being made aware that many anesthesiologists have been giving more than needed to prevent wake-up during surgery. I think some cultural groups of people may not approve of connecting something to their brain waves even if it is helping to provide the exact dosage needed to keep a person sedated during surgery. There are some groups of people in society that may not approve of anything technology can help us with because they dislike technology in general and especially anything to do with technology being used on their body or brain. For the most part the larger portion of society will look at this as a helpful and great way to protect themselves and loved ones from possible harm or overdose. The majority of people would likely appreciate that researchers have developed a device that assures safety through science and technology. I can see how some people don’t trust anything measuring brain waves, but I can also see the side of embracing any advancements in technology and science that help improve the ability of doctors and nurses to provide us with more accurate ways to give better care to the population when we need medical attention. I think the benefits out weigh the skeptics. It is a good thing that we live in a country where if a person or group of people choose to stay clear of any technological advances they can choose to do so. The rest of the people that think this is beneficial can choose to participate. I can see how both sides have beliefs and opinions of their own and I think that is alright. Everyone should be respected for their owns beliefs and interests even if their own are contrasting. It is what makes our world interesting and what keeps us unique. I can also see how looking at the subject through a different lens can shift the thought process to something you would never even consider while looking through another lens. It does open my mind to areas that I would not have even considered a part of this technological device. It is important to keep an open mind and consider most things from many different angles or lenses. It keeps us from limiting ourselves to our own one-track spectrum or agenda[ CITATION Ron18 \l 1033 ]. It allows us to broaden the way we view different ideas and thoughts. I think it assists us with critical thinking. Which really is imperative to truly fully understand and learn concepts. References Ronny Scherer, Ø. G. (2018).
