Interpretation:

To compare densities of several liquid alkanes with water.

Concept Introduction:

Alkanes are non polar species, therefore, will not have strong intermolecular forces, they will tend to have low densities in liquid phase. However, the low density of alkanes is achieved due to the low intermolecular forces. They are non polar compounds, which do not have strong interaction between each other, therefore, the liquid molecules are not attracted between each other as strong as in water, which is very polar and has strong intermolecular forces.
