Professor Garcia has assigned 15 cases in his OM Seminar class to be completed in a 15-week semester. The students, of course, are moaning and groaning that the caseload cannot possibly be completed in the time allotted. Professor Garcia sympathetically suggests that the students work in groups and learn to organize their work efficiently. Knowing when a situation is hopeless, the students make a list of the tasks that have to be completed in preparing a case. These tasks are listed here, along with precedence requirements and estimated time in days. Assuming students will work five days a week on this assignment, how many students should be assigned to each group, and what is the most efficient allocation of tasks? Can 15 cases be completed in a semester? Explain your answer.

You are hired as a project manager to develop the Campus Management System (CMS) of a famous educational complex. CMS is designed to promote automated university administration and provides a medium for teachers, staff and administration to work in harmony. CMS has a complete role based access where in various resources are made available depending upon the role assigned. The Student module includes students to add, modify and view features designed to ease registration. The Academic Management module deals with academic history of the students and it allows determining student's expertise level through his obtained grades. The Fee Management module keeps track of fees paid and dues and allows printing of fee voucher. The Course Management module allows maintaining different courses, the respective instructors and session details. He has been appointed as the department manager for an upcoming large chemical process plant that will be designed and constructed by the organization that he is currently attached to. Baha's responsibilities will include organizing the process unit staff and overseeing the project designers' sketch plans to ensure that the new plant will be designed safely, operable and maintainable. After the construction, he will then be responsible to start up the plant. From experience, Baha noted that a new type of valve sold by a newer supplier could be used in place of more common gate valves sold by established suppliers. In any case, the new valve was less expensive and often gave a tighter shut-off than the current gate valve used by his organization. Thus, Baha convinced the project designers to add more of these new valves to the design of the process unit. His decision improved safety because more flows could be shut off instantaneously in an…arrow_forwardRoger Ginde is developing a program in supply chain management certification for managers. This worked well until there was a problem which resulted in dangerous gases being released. The team of operators had great difficulty in finding the source of the problem and deciding what to do. Because they no longer have access to all the information, they have to spend time explicitly co-ordinating their understanding of the situation by talking to each other. Under the old system, the knowledge would be shared – one operator would know what was happening with another’s area of the plant without explicit communication. Although the team’s individual responsibilities would still have been clearly divided, the knowledge of the system would be shared. How could the new system of individual workstations be modified to make better use of distributed cognition?arrow_forward
- james is replacing the window of a commercial passenger aircraft, but realises that he doesn’t quite have enough new bolts with the screen– he has just over half of the number he needs. the standard practice is usually to throw away old bolts and to refit windows with new bolts provided with the screen. however, time is short, he’s due to finish for the day, and he suspects that if he goes to find more bolts there will be delays and he won’t be able to finish on time. in addition he’ll be late for his date, and he wants to make a good impression. he knows that other members of staff sometimes re-use old bolts when they’re short of parts. is using the old bolts compatible with showing due respect to life, law and the public good?arrow_forwardThe platters, a rock-and-roll group that had many hits in the late 1950s, has undergone many personnel changes since that era. This will place an additional burden on the agency. The director has identified three acceptable alternatives to handle the increased workload.
