Chapter 5.1, Problem 7E
The authors of the paper “Flat-footedness Is Not a Disadvantage for Athletic Performance in Children Aged 11 to 15 Years” (Pediatrics [2009]: e386-e392) studied the relationship between y = Arch height and scores on a number of different motor ability tests for 218 children. They reported the following
- a. Interpret the value of the
correlation coefficient between average hopping height and arch height. What does the fact that the correlation coefficient is negative say about the relationship? Do higher arch heights tend to be paired with higher or lower average hopping heights? - b. The title of the paper suggests that having a small value for arch height (flat-footedness) is not a disadvantage when it comes to motor skills. Do the given correlation coefficients support this conclusion? Explain.

A meta-analysis (Anderson & Bushman, 2001) reported that the average correlation between time spent playing violent video games (X) and engaging in aggressive behavior (Y) in a set of 21 well-controlled experimental studies was +.19. This correlation was judged to be statistically significant. In your own words, what can you say about the nature and strength of the relationship?
Researchers conducting a study of 15 children with a diagnosis of ADHD wish to assess whether the BMI of the children is correlated with degrees of hyperactivity in the child. The BMI of the children is shown in the image. What is the value of the smallest mode in this data? (hint: there may be more than one mode - answer with the smallest one)
Passive exposure to environmental tobacco smoke has been associated with growth suppression and
an increased frequency of respiratory tract infections in normal children. Is this association more
pronounced in children with cystic fibrosis? To answer this question, 43 children (18 girls and 25
boys) attending a 2-week summer camp for cystic fibrosis patients were studied (New England Journal
of Medicine, Sept. 20, 1990). Among several variables measured were the child's weight percentile
(y) and the number of cigarettes smoked per day in the child's home (x).

The predictor variable of greatest interest was the “positivity of emotional expression” in the college yearbook photo. They also had these photographs rated on physical attractiveness. They contacted the same women for follow-up psychological assessments at age 52 (and at other ages; data not shown here). Here are the correlations of these two predictors (based on ratings of the yearbook photo) with several of their self-reported social and emotional outcomes at age 52: (scores in screen shot) a. Psychologists conducted a survey of 258 student drivers and their attitudes toward speeding and reported the results in the British Journal of Educational Psychology (Vol. 80, 2010). One of the variables of interest was the response to the question, “Are you confident that you can resist your friends’ persuasion to drive faster?” Each response was measured on a 7-point scale, from 1=“definitely no” to7=“definitely yes.” The data were collected 5 months after the students had attended a safe-driver presentation. The psychologists reported a sample mean response of 4.98 and a sample standard deviation of 1.62.
