Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The number of stereoisomers in muscarine is to be determined. The number of stereoisomers in which one of the substituents on the ring is trans to the other two is to be determined. The structural formula of muscarine having the configuration
Concept introduction:
For a particular stereoisomer, the maximum number of stereoisomers
When determining the configuration, the molecule is oriented such that the lowest ranked atom points away from the observer.
The order of decreasing priority of the three other atoms or groups is determined. If it traces a clockwise path, the configuration is R, and if it traces a counterclockwise path, the configuration is S.
In cycloalkanes, the groups that lie on the opposite side of the ring are trans to each other.

- Pseudophedrine is a naturally occurring biologically active molecule with two stereogenic centers, as shown in the given skeletal structure. It has 1S, 2S configuration at its stereogenic centers. Redraw (+)-ephedrine, showing the correct configuration at each of the stereogenic centers.arrow_forward12. Natural (2)-menthol, the essential oil primarily responsible for the flavor and aroma of peppermint, is the IR,25,5R-stereoisomer. (a) Identify (2)-menthol from the structures you drew for Problem 50, part (b). (b) Another of the naturally occurring diastereomers of menthol is (1)-isomenthol, the 1S 2R5R- stereoisomer. Identify (1)-isomenthol among your structures. (c) A third is (1)-neomenthol, the 15.25,SR-compound. Find (1)-neomenthol among your structures. (d) Based on your understanding of the conformations of substituted cyclohexanes (Section 4-4), what is the stability order (from most stable to least) for the three diastereomers, menthol, isomenthol, and neomenthol?arrow_forwardGive the stereochemical relationships between each pair of structures. - Under certain reaction conditions, 2,3-dibromobutane reacts with two equivalents of base to give three products, each of which contains two new p bonds. Product A has two sp hybridized carbon atoms, product B has one sp hybridized carbon atom, and product C has none. - A graduate student was studying enzymatic reductions of cyclohexanones when she encountered some interesting chemistry. When she used an enzyme and NADPH to reduce the following ketone, she was surprised to find that the product was optically active. She carefully repurified the product so that no enzyme, NADPH, or other contaminants were present. Still, the product was optically active. Does the product have any asymmetric carbon atoms or other stereocenters?arrow_forwardThere are several rings in this structure. As highlighted in the middle diagram, the two explicit H are both attached to a six-membered ring. As highlighted in the right-hand diagram, the two explicit H are both attached to a five- membered ring. - (A)Menthol, used to flavor various foods and tobacco, is the most stable stereoisomer of 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanol. Draw its most stable conformation. Is the hydroxyl group cis or trans to the isopropyl group? To the methyl group? (b) Neomenthol is a stereoisomer of menthol. That is, it has the same constitution but differs in the arrangement of its atoms in space. Neomenthol is the second most stable stereoisomer of 2-isopropyl-5methylcyclohexanol; it is less stable than menthol but more stable than any other stereoisomer.
