Concept explainers
To explain: When looking at the northern lights a continuous or a line spectrum would be seen.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Northern lights are caused by the collision of charged particles from the sun with the particles high up in the Earth’s atmosphere.
When the charged particles from the sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere, they collide with atoms high up in the Earth’s atmosphere. As a result of this collision, the electrons gain energy and thus emit lights of different wavelengths. A line spectrum is thus created.
Conclusion:
When looking at the northern lights a line spectrum would be seen.
