Concept explainers
In the Doppler effect, does frequency change? Does wavelength change? Does wave speed change?
To explain: Whether the frequency, wavelength and speed changes in the Doppler.
Answer to Problem 45A
Frequency changes and wavelength changes, but no change in wave speed.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
When there is the relative motion between the observer and the source, a change in frequency and hence change in wavelength is observed. This is called Doppler effect.
When a source producing waves, moves towards the observer, its frequency increases, and hence wavelength decreases, as frequency is reciprocal to wavelength. On the other hand if the sound source moves away from the observer, it frequency decreases, and hence wavelength increases. In Doppler effect there is no change in the wave speed.
