Does a boat moving through the water always produce a bow wave? Defend your answer.
To check: Whether a boat moving through the water always produces a bow wave.
Answer to Problem 50A
Not always, only when the speed of the boat increases the speed of the waves.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction: A bow wave is produced when the source propagates faster than the waves it produces.
When a boat moves away in the water, then it produces waves in the water left behind. If the boat moves faster than those waves then it generates a shock producing bow waves.
If the speed of the boat is less than the waves it produced, then the waves will not overlap and bow waves will not produce.
Conclusion: Thus, bow waves are produced only when the speed of the boat is greater than the waves, it is producing.
