Concept Introduction:

The important phosphorus containing functional groups in biology are phosphate esters and phosphate anhydrides. Phosphate esters are formed when acidic $–\mathrm{O}\mathrm{H}$ groups of phosphoric acid are esterified. Two or more linked phosphate groups are called phosphate anhydrides.
