The article “A Debate in the Dentist’s Chair” (San Luis Obispo Tribune, January 28, 2000) described an ongoing debate over whether newer resin fillings are a better alternative to the more traditional silver amalgam fillings. Because amalgam fillings contain mercury, there is concern that they could be mildly toxic and prove to be a health risk to those with some types of immune and kidney disorders. One experiment described in the article used sheep as subjects and reported that sheep treated with amalgam fillings had impaired kidney
- a. In the experiment, a control group of sheep that received no fillings was used but there was no placebo group. Explain why it is not necessary to have a placebo group in this experiment.
- b. The experiment compared only an amalgam filling treatment group to a control group. What would be the benefit of also including a resin filling treatment group in the experiment?
- c. Why do you think the experimenters used sheep rather than human subjects?

- “Are Women Really More Talkative Than Men?” is the title of an article that appeared in the journal Science. In the article, Mehl, Vazire, Ramirez-Esparza, Slatcher, & Pennebaker (2007) report the results of a study of 396 men and women. Each participant wore a microphone that recorded every word he or she uttered. The researchers counted the number of words uttered by men and women and compared them. The data below are fictional but they re-create the pattern that Mehl and colleagues observed: Men: 16,345 17,222 15,646 14,889 16,701 Women: 17,345 15,593 16,624 16,696 14,200 Conduct steps for hypothesis testing. The check teeth of an extinct primate species was the subject of research reported in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology (Vol. 142, 2010). A total of 18 check teeth extracted from skulls discovered in western Wyoming were analyzed. Each tooth was classified according to degree of wear (unworn, slight, light-moderate, moderate, moderate-heavy, or heavy). The 18 measurements are listed here. Data on Degree of Wear Unknown Slight Unknown Slight Unknown Heavy Moderate Unknown Slight Light-moderate Unknown Light-moderate Moderate-heavy Moderate Moderate Unworn Slight Unknown Identify the variable measured in the study and its type (qualitative and quantitative) Form frequency distribution. It is known that 85% of the cabs in the city are Green and 15% are Blue. A witness at the scene identified the cab involved in the accident as a Blue Cab. This witness was tested under similar visibility conditions, and made correct color identifications in 80% of the trial instances. What is the probability that the cab involved in the accident was a Blue Cab rather than a Green one? One study examined survivors’ recall of the sinking of the ship Titanic (Riniolo, Koledin, Drakulic, & Payne, 2003). The researchers reviewed the transcripts of survivors’ testimony at governmental hearings (www.titanicinquiry.org) to see whether they testified that the ship was intact or breaking apart during the ship’s final plunge (it was in fact breaking apart). To test for eyewitness accuracy, testimony of 20 survivors was examined to see if there was an equal likelihood of survivors saying the ship was intact or breaking apart.
