The following is from an article titled “After the Workout, Got Chocolate Milk?” that appeared in the Chicago Tribune (January 18, 2005):
Researchers at Indiana University at Bloomington have found that chocolate milk effectively helps athletes recover from an intense workout. They had nine cyclists bike, rest four hours, then bike again, three separate times. After each workout, the cyclists downed chocolate milk or energy drinks Gatorade or Endurox (two to three glasses per hour); then, in the second workout of each set, they cycled to exhaustion. When they drank chocolate milk, the amount of time they could cycle until they were exhausted was similar to when they drank Gatorade and longer than when they drank Endurox.
The article is not explicit about this, but in order for this to have been a well-designed experiment, it must have incorporated random assignment. Briefly explain where the researcher would have needed to use random assignment in order for the stated conclusion to be valid.

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardWhat do people actually order at Chipotle? How healthy is a normal Chipotle meal? Chipotle and other relatively new fast casual chains like Shake Shack, Potbelly and Five Guys typically promote themselves as having healthier menu choices than the traditional fast food outlets like McDonald's, Taco Bell, Burger King, etc.The recommended daily calorie intake for most adults is 1,600 to 2,400. The histogram below shows the calories in approximately 3,000 meals ordered from Chipotle on Grubhub. While the histogram is not perfectly symmetric (there is mild right skewness), it is close enough to being symmetric and bell-shaped to justify using the 68-95-99.7 rule. Suppose the distribution of calories in a Chipotle meal can be considered symmetric and bell-shaped with mean 1079 calories and standard deviation 296 calories. Use the 68-95-99.7 rule to answer the following questions.a. What is the approximate percentage of the Chipotle meals that have between 487 and 1671 calories?b. They randomly assigned volunteers into one of three groups. The people in the first group were asked to taste a snack that was described as a new health bar containing high levels of protein, vitamins, and fiber. The people in the second group were asked to taste the same snack but were told it was a tasty chocolate bar with a raspberry center. After tasting the snack, participants were asked to rate their hunger level on a scale from 1 (not at all hungry) to 7 (very hungry). The people in the third group were asked to rate their hunger but were not given a snack. The data in the table are consistent with summary quantities given in the paper (although the sample sizes in the actual study were larger). The pharmacists then measured how long the individuals slept after ingestion. Examine with an appropriate hypothesis test whether there is a difference in mean sleep duration after taking the two drugs. In the event that you need to check whether the distribution in the two groups can be assumed to be the same, it is sufficient to use the rule of thumb to determine this. Sleep duration can be assumed to follow a normal distribution. Use a = 0.05. Show all six steps. Please…arrow_forward
- A certain virus affects 0.4% of the population. A test used to detect the virus in a person is positive 90% of the time if the person has the virus (true positive) and 10% of the time if the person does not have the virus (false positive). Fill out the remainder of the following table and use it to answer the two questions below based on a total sample of 100,000 people.
