Interpretation: To determine the source of the “cargo” for glycerol 3−phosphate in the dihydroxyacetone phosphate−glycerol 3−phosphate shuttle system.
Concept introduction: In the glycolysis metabolic pathway, a glucose molecule breaks down into two pyruvate molecules. ATP and NADH are produced along with pyruvate. The net overall equation for the glycolysis process is as follows:
Glucose+2ADP+2Pi+2NAD+→2Pyruvate+2NADH+2ATP+2H++2H2O
Electron transfer chain is defined as a series of biochemical reactions in which the electrons and hydrogen ions (H+) that are obtained from NADH and FADH2 react with molecular oxygen (O2) to produce water (H2O). NADH and FADH2 are oxidized through the redox reactions.
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is associated with the redox reactions in metabolism. Its reduced form is NADH and oxidized form is NAD+.
