Chapter 22, Problem 22.31E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The capillary depression of a column of mercury in tube with radius 2.00mm is to be calculated.

Concept introduction:

Surface tension effect shows itself in systems where a cylindrical solid surface is present. A very narrow cylindrical surface is called a capillary. When a capillary is immersed into a liquid, the surface tension that exists at the liquid-vapor interface will act according to the Laplace-Young equation.

A liquid rises to a height of 1.50 cm in a capillary tube. What is the radius of the tube if the density and surface tension of the liquid are 1.80×10³ kg/m³ and 0.135 N/m respectively?
Two students were discussing about the Linde's process, when one of them suggested that Liquefaction of a gas depends strongly on two factors. The other student then asked the following questions related to the Liquefaction of gases: (a) What are those two factors? As the temperature is decreased from 700K, which gas will liquefy first-ammonia, methane, or carbon dioxide? Give reasons? (b) Calculate the rms speed of a sample of 2-butene (C4H8) at 20 oC? (c) A technician connected two balloons together joined by stopcock as shown below. The 3.0 L balloon contains "He" at a pressure of 4.0 atm and the other one contains 1.0 L NH3 at a pressure 1.0 atm. Calculate the total pressure of the system after the stopcock is opened. Assume the temperature remains constant.
Which statement is no of Brownian motion? It is independent of temperature. It is due to the random fluctuation of the energy content of the environment. It causes the random movement of pollen granules suspended in water. It is due to thermal noise.
