Cells communicate with each other, which is achieved by signal transduction. Chemical agents that are secreted by neurons are neurotransmitters. Organic substances produced in plants and animals that act to regulate physiological activities are hormones. Cytokines are broad category of small proteins involved in cell signaling. LPS stands for lipopolysaccharides.
