Oxidative phosphorylation is one of the major roles of mitochondrial intermembrane space. During electron transport, protons move from the mitochondrial matrix to the intermembrane space.
There are proteins in the cytoplasm thatcontain PTS (peroxisomal targeting signals), which are recognized by peroxins.
