Concept Introduction:
VSEPR model is useful tool to determine shapes as well as properties such as polarity of molecules.
The extent of polarity is quantitatively expressed as dipole moment. It is defined as product of charges of two bonded atoms and the separation between them. The electronegativity difference decides the direction of dipole moment. It is indicated by an arrow head from positive end towards negative end.
For complex molecules, the shape must be determined prior to determination of individual dipoles. Thus shape is governed by the VSEPR model.

(a) Draw the three-dimensional structure of the 2-propanol molecule and predict the geometry around each carbon atom. (b) Is the 2-propanol molecule polar or nonpolar? (c) What kinds of intermolecular attractive forces exist between the 2-propanol molecules? (d) The isomer 1-propanol has the same molecular weight as 2-propanol, yet 2-propanol boils at 82.6 °C and 1-propanol boils at 97.2 °C. Explain the difference.arrow_forwardWhich of the following sets contains an ionic compound, a molecular compound, and an acid, in that order? The atoms X, Y, and Z have electronegativities of 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5, respectively. The molecule adopts a tetrahedral geometry with X atoms at the corners, Y atoms in the middle of the edges, and Z atoms at the center of the molecule. Explain the polarity of this molecule and the factors contributing to it.arrow_forward
- b. Nitrogen trifluoride, NF3, has been considered a potent greenhouse gasreleased in some high-tech industries, including the manufacture of LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and solar panels.(i) Draw the Lewis structure of NF3.(ii) Define the type of chemical bond between the three fluorine atoms and thenitrogen atom.(iii) Describe the molecular geometry of NF3.arrow_forwardDesignate the structural features of polar molecules using partial charges or arrows. Ethyl heptanoate is responsible for grape aroma. It has the chemical formula C9H1802 but structural formula CH3-(CH2)s-COO-CH2-CH3. A structure is shown below. Which bonds would feature partial charges? Designate them using partial charges or arrows. H H H | H H H Harrow_forwardH. H. H. H. H. The diagram above shows two resonance structures for a molecule of C6H6. The phenomenon shown in the diagram best supports which of the following claims about the bonding in C6H6 ? (A) In the C6H6 molecule, all the bonds between the carbon atoms have the same length. (B) Because of variable bonding between its carbon atoms, C6H6 is a good conductor of electricity. (C) The bonds between carbon atoms in C6H6 are unstable, and the compound decomposes quickly. The C6H6 molecule contains three single bonds between carbon atoms and three double bonds between (D) carbon atoms. IIUarrow_forward
