Chapter 17, Problem 42AE

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The oxidation state of Mn in Mn(OH)2 has to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

The rules that are followed when oxidation state is assigned are as follows:

  • For elements in their natural elemental state, the oxidation state is assigned as zero.
  • For H the oxidation state is +1 while in hydrides the oxidation state is 1.
  • For O the oxidation state is 2 while in peroxides is 1 ; for OF2 the oxidation state is +2.
  • The alkali or alkaline earth metals exhibit positive oxidation number or state.
  • The effective sum of all oxidation numbers of various elements in certain compound is zero, while the same sum is equivalent to charge on polyatomic ion in case of complex ion.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The oxidation state of Mn in MnF3 has to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Refer to part (a).

(c)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The oxidation state of Mn in MnO2 has to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Refer to part (a).

(d)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The oxidation state of Mn in K2MnO4 has to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Refer to part (a).

(e)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The oxidation state of Mn in KMnO4 has to be identified. compound that acts as best oxidizing agent has to be identified. Compound among Mn(OH)2, MnF3, MnO2, K2MnO4 and KMnO4 that acts as best oxidizing agent has to be given.
