Evolution of a Menace
The mutant alleles that confer antibiotic resistance on members of a bacterial population can move to other populations by gene flow and increase by genetic drift. For example. MRSA living on a person's skin might be transferred to her roommate's skin via a shared towel or article of clothing. After joining the population of nonresistant bacteria on the roommate's skin, the newly arrived MRSA may reproduce and may even transfer resistance alleles directly to local bacteria through a process known as conjugation (see Chapter 20). The resistance alleles, introduced to the bacterial population on the roommate's skin by gene flow, may subsequently experience genetic drift that increases their frequency. But what will happen if antibiotics are introduced to the new environment (that is. the roommate's body)? Find out in Section 16.3.

- A Cure for Beriberi In 1887, a strange nerve disease attacked the people in the Dutch East Indies. The disease was beriberi. Symptoms of the disease included weakness and loss of appetite. Victims often died of heart failure. Scientists thought the disease might be caused by bacteria. They injected chickens with bacteria from the blood patients with beriberi. The injected chickens became sick. However, those groups of chickens that were not injected with bacteria also became sick. One of the scientists, Dr. Eijkman, noticed something. Before the experiment, all chickens had eaten whole grain rice, but during the experiment, the chickens were fed polished rice. Dr. Eijkman researched this interesting case. He found that polished rice lack thiamine, a vitamin necessary for good health. Questions:1. What was the observation?2. What was the hypothesis?3. How was the hypothesis tested?4. What was the result of the experiment?5. What conclusion could be drawn?6. Which of…arrow_forwardBacteria have an enormous ability to adapt to new conditions. Which two of the following are they main factors behind this phenomenon? New mutations occur continuously with very high frequency in the genome of bacteria Bacteria generally have small genomes Bacteria have a short generation time The rate of DNA synthesis is very high in bacteria Presence of a selection pressure.arrow_forwardBacteria can evolve resistance to antibiotics quickly because of which processes? - In one paragraph, using your own words, explain the role that natural selection plays in the growth of antibiotic-resistant strands of bacteria.arrow_forwardThe Kishony performed a simple but elegant experiment using a “mega-plate.” Which of the following is a fair conclusion that can be drawn from this study? The majority of antibiotic resistance occurs via horizontal gene transfer (HGT) between Actinobacteria Sensitive bacteria may acquire resistance to high concentrations of the antibiotic through many mutations Bacteria will gradually lose resistance to an antibiotic if you plate them on a large enough plate Bacteria will migrate via chemotaxis away from recombinant phage used in phage therapyarrow_forwardHi this is an intro paragraph for my short essay on antibiotic resistance connecting to natural selection and microbiology. please add or correct anything it needs!arrow_forward
- Paragraph Drawing The previous scenario is a greatly-simplified demonstration of how antibiotic resistance is selected for in bacteria. It assumes bacterial cells are either totally resistant (BR+, red cells) or completely susceptible (BRo, yellow). In reality, just like people differ in height, with many different heights possible, bacteria in a population can differ along a whole spectrum of resistance. - Certain strains of bacteria that were killed by the antibiotic penicillin in the past are now resistant. The probable explanation for this is that the reproductive rate must have increased naturally. a mutation for resistance occurred that was passed on to succeeding generations because it had high survival value. the strains have become resistant because they needed to do so for survival. individual bacteria gradually became tolerant to increasing levels of penicillin over some time.arrow_forwardWhy is it so hard to get rid of the following organism? They undergo bottlenecking in their populations when taking antibiotics? They gain plasmids that help them build resistance. Using antibiotics are ineffective. They come from mosquitos and they are abundant. Part of their life cycle includes zoonosis with snails.arrow_forwardBacteria that live in the digestive systems of cows help break down the plants that cows eat, providing nutrients to cows.
