Concept explainers
To discuss:
The five categories of receptors classified by stimulus modality.
Introduction:
Structures that are specialized for the detection of a stimulus, such as pain and heat, are referred to as sensory receptors. Such receptors can either be real sense organs or simple nerve endings. Sense organs (many complex structures containing receptors) combine other tissues, such as muscular, epithelial, and connective tissues, with nervous tissues. The nervous tissues enhance the response of the sense organs to a particular kind of stimulus. Sense organs are involved in the transmission of data (through neurons) to the specific place inside the nervous system. Such sense organs may range from simple microscopic structures, like dendrites, to complex structures, like the ear and the eye.

- Livingston book (Improvising Medicine) Drawing on Livingston’s discussion in chapter 5, “Pain and Laughter,” discuss why global health policies and practices have largely ignored the problem of pain and palliation in the global south. Give at least two examples from the text that support your claims.arrow_forwardHow vibrations of the tympanic membrane lead to stimulation of the cochlear nerve.arrow_forwardA sensory receptor responds when activated, and an electric signal is generated and travels through nerve fibers to the _______ to be analyzed.arrow_forward

- which head movement direction moves stereocilia towards kinociliumarrow_forwardTrue or false: Hair cells in the spiral organ will depolarize or hyperpolarize, depending on the direction in which the stereocilia are bentarrow_forwardAll sensory organs convert energy in the environment into action potentials in the nervous systern. Explain the process of how our ears convert energy in the form of sound waves in the air into action potentials along a nerve. Include the appropriate order of structures and regions of the ear as well as the physiological process of creating action potentials and interpreting them in the brain.arrow_forward
