Concept Introduction: Oxidation is defined as the addition of oxygen or loss of electrons. A substance which undergoes oxidation is said to be oxidized. The substance which is oxidized is called as reducing agent.
Reduction is defined as the addition of hydrogen or gain of electrons. A substance which undergoes reduction is said to be reduced. The substance which is reduced is known as oxidizing agent.
Reaction that involves both oxidation and reduction simultaneously is known as redox reaction.
For each element, oxidation number is based on the number of electrons assigned to it.
