Introduction:
The complement system consists of thirty heat-labile proteins from plasma, which are involved in the opsonization of pathogens for assisting the immune responses of the host. The complement proteins are protease in nature, which help to cleave the antigens to neutralize the infectious substances. It is a cascade or a series of proteins (from C1 to C9 and some proteins are indicated as lower cases a) and b). They commences at the time of infection and is termed as the complement activation.
There are three pathways that are involved in the complement system to provide an immune response against the infections. They are as follows: Classical pathway - activates directly by a pathogen or indirectly by antibodies. Lectin and Alternate pathways are the multiplication loop of the two pathways.

- Select the best answer or answers from the choices given: Suppose your blood is AB positive. This means that (a) agglutinogens A and B are present on your red blood cells, (b) there are no anti-A or anti-B antodies in your plasma, c) your blood is Rh+ (d) all of the above.arrow_forwardCancer cells have a complex interaction with the cells of the immune system that are present in the stroma. The immune cells have the potential to destroy the tumor if it is recognized as aberrant tissue. Which one of the following statements correctly describes an interaction between cancer cells and the immune cells of the stroma? A. Tumors stimulate formation of new blood vessels—angiogenesis—promoting tumor survival. B. The tumor establishes an immunosuppressive environment by blocking white-cell activation. C. Tumors invoke an inflammatory reaction that blocks entry of immune cells into the stroma. D. Immune cells block tumor growth by providing signals that inhibit cancer cell proliferation.arrow_forwardThe head of the oncology divison of a large biotech company proposes to develop a therapeutic antibody to treat cancers with mutant B-Raf oncogene. - John frequently encountered bacterial infections. Tests for immune cells showed the presence of mature B and T cells in his blood. Extensive analysis showed that John was lacking a gene responsible for a protein for complement factor C5. 1. Which immune response will be inhibited because of C5 deficiency? 2. How would it affect John’s ability to fight infections? Specifically what type of infections is he likely to have difficulty fighting? Please explain in detail. 3. What would have been the implications if he was lacking the C3 complement component?arrow_forwardHenry showed his mother the bite mark that he just received from a large bug in his backyard as he was playing.
