The closest packing structures are explained as most space-efficient and regularly packed structures. This is usually seen in crystals where lattice gives the closest packed structures. In the cubic closest packing, the layers of the closest packed spheres are arranged in such a way that every third layer is laying over one another. A unit cell is defined as the smallest repeating portion in the crystal lattice.
